St. Thomas, named after Thomas Talbot, was almalgated with village called Millersburg in 1871. Shortly after, St. Thomas became an important railway function. Jumbo, the world's largest elephant at that time, was died in St. Thomas after being struck by a train. A life-sized statue was built shortly after to commemorate Jumbo's life.

A large sector of St. Thomas' economy relies on automotive manufacturing, which two of the largest employers being Takumi Stamping Canada and Masco Canada.

The Elgin Military Museum was founded in 1982, and honors those who have who fought in war. The museum features many UN and NATO badges, models and two M113 armored personnel carriers. The museum also owns an Oberon Class Cold War Submarine, but since St. Thomas is surrounded by land the submarine is located at Port Burwell.

The North America Railway Hallway of Fame is located in St. Thomas and honors railway history and educates the public about the importance of the importance of railway transportation.
