Is auto insurance mandatory in Ontario?

Car insurance is a mandatory coverage in Ontario. The provincial government has established a standard Auto Insurance Policy that all companies must offer. It was designed to give you and your loved ones basic protection for your vehicle insurance, but there are still a lot of options you can add to that basic protection.

You may wonder, “what happens if I drive without this mandatory insurance in Ontario?” If you don’t have mandatory auto insurance, you can be fined or may lose your license, and your vehicle can be impounded. Plus, if you’re sued for damaging someone’s personal property or for injuring or killing someone, you’ll have to bear the cost on your own. On top of this, fines are $5,000 to $25,000 for your first conviction. A second conviction can between $10,000 to $50,000. To make matters worse, your insurance premiums in the future for having this on your record would be very steep instead of cheap.
